If you have ever seen the movie Mystic River Gone Baby Gone or Shutter Island these stories were all novels before they became movies. They all are written by Dennis Lehane to. Dennis Lehane’s latest book The Drop was also turned into a movie. The funny thing is I didn’t know all of these movies were the inspiration from his novels. That is how I came across the publication. I watched the movie first and loved it. The book has a captivating narrative. It is a mystery love story with crime elements to it and has feel good parts all emerged into one. This is my kind of book because it is well-paced the characters draw you in and there are some surprises thrown in the mix.

The other pictures are from the movie but it gives you a feel for who the characters are in the book.

Bob is a discontent desolate bartender longing for something meaningful in his existence. He clocks in day in and day out at the bar. His cousin Marv used to own the bar but now the Chechen mafia owns it. Although Marv is still the manager he is not responsible and needs Bobs help. One day Bob’s life changes when he finds a beat up puppy left for dead in a trashcan. He meets a woman that night named Nadia. They become friends and she gives him pointers on how to care for a dog. Just when two broken people unite bad luck comes their way. The ex boyfriend of Nadia wants his dog back and he is not somebody that you want to mess with. Bob’s cousin is falling apart and making risky decisions. They have to deal with the Chechen mafia that owns the bar. It is one thing after another.

If you like crime with a little mystery thrown into the story then you will enjoy this novel.  When a book is fast paced and gets to the point in each scene that is when I stay engaged. This novel gets you to the mark and keeps you turning the page till you look up and its fours hours later. The author writes the book in a way were the scenes flow together and he connects the dots at the end of the novel. The characters are interesting understandable and engaging. In some books the dialogue is not great and you can tend to get bored. In The Drop there is the right amount of talking and it is believable.

What I loved about the book is the main character Bob is relatable. Who hasn’t felt lonely at times or ah whats the point? Nothing good happens anyway. The kind things Bob does in the book reminds of the kindness I have seen people show me. The author then throws in a few twists in the book that I wasn’t expecting. When the surprises are done right you don’t even see it coming. I love at the end of the book Dennis Lehane didn’t leave you hanging and wonder whats going to happen next. He gave an ending and to me that is the best because I like when things are resolved. The fact that I read the book in one day is a testament to how well written the novel is.

If you are like me and you enjoy a little crime you love to get lost in the characters and the book you want the book to have an ending and you delight in a few curve balls thrown at you then you should give it a shot. Or if you are parallel to me watch the movie first then read the book. They are both brilliantly made. However my husband says I am not comparable to the rest of the world in where I do it backwards. Apparently you are supposed to read the book and then watch the movie. I say you do whatever tickles your fancy.

I love Lehanes work. I discovered him when I read the short story Until Gwen that appeared in one of the yearly issues of The Best American Short Stories awhile back. Definitely gritty. I try to write character like that but wonder if Ill ever get such personas just right.

I know some of his characters make you cringe. I enjoy the way he sets up his stories. I am reading Gone Baby Gone right now and I like it.

I love Dennis Lehane – I read a book of his set in the twenties (naturally cant for the life of me remember the title right now!) over the summer and made a mental note to hunt down more of his so thanks for the reminder!
