Surviving Long Car Rides

Posted in - Personal Journey on August 1st 2014 8 Comments

I love my husband and I love spending time with him. However driving twenty two bone crushing hours in a row is not my idea of  an easy ride across the country. That is how my husband used to do his driving in his single days. He had his red bull in one hand and Queens Dont Stop Me Now blaring out the car speakers. Now that Chandler is married he realized that plan was not going to go over strongly. However moving across country from Phoenix Arizona to Nashville Tennessee takes patience and planning. My husband and I like planning our trip so it goes smoothly as possible. We need our comforts and we both are very particular about what we need for the trip.

The two things that is most important to my husband and I are food and sleep. We are two minutes from a meltdown and nit picking at each other when six hours has rolled by and food and sleep are not in the equation. I act like I havent eaten in years and my husband starts to get annoyed with the traffic. Then we go through the gamut of where we should eat because my husband and I want to pick the number one place to eat in that state. Can you tell we are foodies? However that plan does not always work out so easily. For example we drive into Sulfur Louisiana looking for this famous Cajun food restaurant and everywhere we drive the restaurants are closed. We are annoyed at this point but not giving up. Driving down the road we find a Raising Canes. However it is packed to the nines with heathen children running around with their heads cut off and parents just not caring because they obviously need a break from their terrorist children. At this point I am saying a prayer because I both know we are fried at this point from the stress of moving and driving. We decide to scratch the plan of finding a restaurant and head out of Sulfur Louisiana in the next town. We do end up finding a restaurant in Henderson Louisiana. We stuffed our faces with Pats Huvals Camp style Craw fish Etoufee and a bowl of Craw fish Bisque and it is if you had an explosion of awesomeness in your mouth. Pats Fishermens Wharf was worth the hunt. They did have turtle soup and fried frog legs but I was not about to be brave and try them.

Now that are bellys are full and we are no longer going to choke somebody out we can make it to our hotel in Jackson Mississippi for some much needed sleep. Again my husband and I are very particular about our sleep and if we both dont have a full nights rest it is game over and we should just be deemed the whiny couple. Our plan was to get two single beds because I am a crazy sleeper and will move around like I am running a marathon in my dreams. My husband on the other hand is a snorer. Normally every night I want to chuck a pillow across the room at his head but realize that is not what rational adults do. He tells me he wants to duck tape my feet together. We do neither of these things and compromise with two beds and ear plugs. The other important detail is to have the right amount of pillows. I need three pillows and my husband needs four pillows. Although he tries to steal mine from me in the middle of the night and sometimes succeeds I usually let it slide. Luckily we brought extra pillows for the car ride so there are plenty to go around. We have the room completely dark and the air turned on just right and we are in business for the long drive the next day. It sounds silly but hey its the little things in life that get a person through moving across the country to a new state.

What are some imperative things you need when you are taking a long trip?

How the food and sleep can make the best of us! My hubby snores too. Since we find out he has sleep apnea he is hooked on to the c-pap machine while sleeping. Sometimes in my dreams i really kick him. When he gets hungry anything can make him angry. so if we are going on a long trip I will have plenty of snacks in the car.

Food and sleep are the two most important ingredients for my well being also. Hungry Tim is not as pleasant as full Tim. Glad you guys made it across the country in one piece. I look forward to reading your post on life in Nashville.

I always like having a snack to take along (banana chips or something thatll pack a punch) and some cold-brew coffee in a thermos. That way I dont have to buy something overpriced along the way.

I really liked you story. Very funny!

Ah yes the long road trip. Takes a strong marriage to survive that! LOL But sounds like you got it handled properly…I am sure the Etoufee helped:)

Id say food and adequate rest are at the top of our list as well! Driving or not they make us all much better people and better equipped to handle any situation. My husband and I took our three girls and a guest on a ten day camping trip last year and had a couple of 5 hour plus drives but we managed just fine and knowing we were headed to a spectacular destination kept everyone in good spirits. We stopped whenever there was a need and my hubby and I enjoyed good conversations while the girls kept themselves entertained or slept :-)

Loved the road trip because I can relate. I no longer take them as we hate each other at the end. I do trial anywhere from one hour to 5 hours for a dog trial. I bring my pillow and my husbands and yes my dogs. Food is important to us as well so we will bring an insulated tote full of snacks we want. My husband also snores so I feel your pain. Wait until he is older it only gets worse.

I need books and lots of magazines on long road trips. We took five nights to make the move between ID and NC both times we moved cross country and my husband drives most of the time. If not reading I can sleep like a log while in a moving vehicle which is great. The worst for us was dealing with our two VERY unhappy cats. I know that feeling about looking for the perfect place to eat but then its not open etc. Well always try to see what extra sights we can fit on. On the last move we were able to catch Bob Dylan in Nashville. I know Ive said it before but welcome to your new home. What an awesome city to live in.
