The Power of the Local Library
I have always loved reading from a young age. Having been grounded half of my childhood ‚ the only thing I could do is read. I loved books because it took me into someone else’s world. I got to forget for a couple hours of being grounded while my friends got to play. Suddenly there was a great power of emotions I had never experienced before. The novel was a magnet drawing me in. This began the love of ; hence‚ buying books and receiving books for gifts.
However‚ when I became an adult‚ purchasing books became a pricey endeavor. I no longer was a kid living at home with their parents and could spend whatever money made from babysitting. There where bills to pay and responsibilities to take care of. It took me till the age of 29 to start using the local public library. My Mother-in-law would always explain about the great books she would find to read at the local library. She said they had movies that one could check out. Not just the old VHS movie from the 1980’s either. There are new DVDs that just came out a couple months ago. That got my thinking about all the money spent on Amazon renting movies and shows. My husband and I do not have cable and would spend but loads of money on renting DVDs from red box and then forget to take them back. Then‚ we would get late charge fees. Sometimes what had been spent in a month added up to 50 dollars.
One weekend we both decided to go get a library card and check out what was so attractive about the place. We lived in Scottsdale at the time and the one library we went to looked like it came out of a fancy architect magazine. Plus‚ I would always see people taking their family and work pictures there. The words that came to mind as I looked around the beautifully‚ kept library where‚ “why did I wait so long to go to the library?” They had every DVD movie one could imagine. The new films had a three day rent limit‚ which is longer than Red box or Amazon. Guess what? It is free dollars! Down one of the aisles was a magazine rack filled with all the latest magazines and newspapers. I remember spending so much money on magazines because I wanted the latest-lifestyle magazine. My husband would come over to my survival apartment when I was single and laugh at all the stacks of magazines that had accumulated. There are aisles upon aisles of books for whatever flavor you are feeling. The one thing I love is in the front they have a couple aisles made of the newest and most popular books and DVDs to check out. Plus‚ one can ask a librarian to look up a particular book or use computers to research if a book is available.
There are a long list of wonderful words I could say about the mystic place. However‚ that could take all day. I still love the touch and smell of books and will still buy to collect every once in a while. I just won’t break the bank. My love for books has grown stronger than … because the library has opened up so many different reading options. The library is magical and has put a spell on me. I am sold for life.
Do you love your local library? Do you think it is magical?
As of now (11) people have had something to say...

Yes‚ I have always loved the local public library wherever I have lived! I recall weekly library visits as child and hiding away with a mountain of wonderful stories to take me to faraway lands. My dad would sometimes discover me reading by flashlight under the covers at night. I could tell his anger wasn’t genuine; he couldn’t bluff his pride at having a daughter who loved to read! The titles of some stories are still lodged in my mind: “Half Magic‚” “Mystery at Mycenae‚” “The Castle of Adventure‚” “Mrs. Mike” to name a few.
Your blog has helped bring back happy memories. Thanks for writing it!

Hi Crystal‚ like you I am very fond of libraries and belong to the local ones at both my summer and winter places‚ though in summer local means 100km return trip ! A useful feature is access to internet which proved useful for a couple of blog posts when my hard drive crashed and no tech service was available. Long live the library !

My Mom was a librarian so it’s safe to say I love libraries and all that they offer. They are a haven of sorts that can offer a respite in our very hurried lives when we really need it.

My local library is very old‚ very busy‚ and very loved. A new one is being built as we speak. In college‚ I discovered how libraries carry much more than just books. In another life I would have become a media center specialist

I know it sounds terrible but I haven’t given any thought to my local library until i read your post. Things we did in the past have a way of slipping away. With that said I think I will visit mine as I hear they just remodeled it.

The public library is like a temple. Such an extraordinary place full of free books just waiting to be picked. I’m living abroad right now so I don’t really have a lot of access to English books. Though when I return home‚ there will be frequent trips to the library.

Hi Crystal‚ I found you via BHB‚ and think I have been here only once before. I’m trying to change that!
As far as libraries go‚ I think they provide a wonderful service. Not only can ANYONE access things (often for free)‚ they provide an environment that is quiet and helpful. They also encourage reading‚ which‚ as a teacher and lover of literature – and reading – I love!
Nice post. You’ve made me want to visit my own library.
