Garage sale addict
Saturday morning‚ I was up at four am‚ on Craigslist‚ writing down all the addresses of the garages sales around our area. My husband wakes up to get a glass of milk and gives me the “why are you up at four am on the internet look?” He then realizes what I am doing. A deal is thrown out on the table. He will go with me if I wake him up in two hours‚ make him hot coffee‚ in to go cup. I am on it. I am like a drug addict when it comes to garage sales‚ and I need my fix. I know I have a short window with my husband and I try and not push it. Whatever I can do to keep him in the game will help me.
We head out on our garage sale extravaganza at 6:45 am. According to my husband‚ this is a good time to get to the treasures first. We drove to the houses that I found on craigslist. However‚ those garage sales did not have anything worth re-selling. We did get paid anyway because it led us on a goose hunt to find more sales. As we kept driving off the grid‚ we found more. We live in Tempe and we drove all the way to the edge of Chandler. Basically‚ all one can see are mountains and grass. We were hungry for the chase and we put all our chips in.
We saw a roadrunner bird run across the street. For some reason‚ we thought these were myths. Apparently‚ they are alive and living in Chandler‚ Arizona. We see a sign for a garage sale and we follow it. Seemingly‚ we had to work for the money. We drove five minutes deep into the suburbs to find the house. However‚ there is profit in confusion. As I pull up to to the man’s house‚ I see a look of “I mean business” on his face. He is wearing a tool belt to put his money in. I spot the Star wars figurines and tell my husband to run over there and see if they are worth anything. I knew my husband would know if they are worth anything. He loves Star wars movies. They are worth ten to fifteen dollars on Amazon. I am excited that we got a little payday and they only cost two dollars apiece.
We still had some juice in us left. However‚ we thought that lightening does not strike twice. At this rate in the game‚ we had been to ten garage sales‚ and It took that many to find a deal. So we drive deeper into the suburbs and find another garage sale. These people have tons of stuff and all their neighbors are there chatting it up. I knew they were just trying to get rid of their stuff and didn’t care about the money. My team mate and I separate to find the gold. My husband has found something and signals me over.
He finds seventeen of the Stampin up‚ sets.
Some of these go for forty dollars online. The guy is running the sale and I tell my husband I will negotiate this one. I ask him how much for the stamp sets. He says‚ “five dollars apiece.” I knew I was not paying that. However‚ I knew if I took them all and tried to a give a price that way‚ I would have a better chance of coming out ahead. I start off low and offer him ten dollars for all of them. He gives the look‚ “yea right‚ try again.” I then say “fifteen dollars.” He is breaking but still holding on for more money. I then say “twenty dollars” and he says “no.” However‚ the garage addict in me has to get the deal. I then look at him and say‚ “no one else is going to give you this deal‚ and I am taking all of these off your hands.” He gives up and we walk away with seventeen stamp sets. We are giddy like little children because we made out. We got in the car and calculated that we paid a dollar thirty three apiece for the stamp sets. There was a sweet little payday for us.
What I learned is that it takes at least ten garage sales to find a deal. Also‚ lightening can strike twice if one is in it to win it. In addition‚ Craigslist is not always a safe bet to find lucrative sales. Sometimes‚ it is just driving around aimlessly. Furthermore‚ also giving the suburbs out in the middle of nowhere‚ a shot.
What have been your experience’s with garage sales? Are you a fellow‚ garage sale‚ addict like me?
As of now (35) people have had something to say...

Well‚ That’s because I TURNED you on to EBAY selling! I went to an Estate sale last week and bought one item. The lady who ran it said Saturday will be cheaper‚ so I hadn’t planned on garage sales that day‚ BUT because I was going back I figured why not? So like you I did go on craigslist for some more BUT only can across one…….I ended up at about 6 sales including the estate sale and only within a 1 1/2 driving distance. BOY all that in n out of the car wears you out! My treasures were 2 at the Estate sale Norman Rockwell plates for $2.50….A brand new 4’ piece tool set for $4.00 and a vintage backgammon game for $3.00’( I have sold 2 of those so far!)……you just never know what you May find out there! You know what they say…..another person’s garbage is someone else’s treasure!

I have been to a few garage sales in my time‚ not an addict‚ just curious I suppose. At least where I live my experience has been that I can find better stuff at the dollar store! Never found that rare artifact or ‘deal’ – I have always spent much more on gas trying to find the places!
You must live in a great area for garage sales‚ I would probably go more if I had the finds that you describe

I’m not a garage sale addict but my friend and I sometimes use them for a fun day out – sometimes I get some good deals but most of the time its the kinds of stuff I’ve been getting rid of so don’t want again.

Hi Crystal‚
Good thing that roadrunner didn’t beat you to those stamps. Your determination earned you that deal. Good for you!
I’m not a garage sale person at all‚ but I don’t see anything wrong with enjoying them‚ if that’s what you like to do.
Kind regards‚
Bill

NOT an addict…but then shopping has never been sport for me That said‚ I have found some great bargains at the few garage sales I have ventured to. Mostly children’s books for my niece’s schoolroom but a few very cool bud vases and even a campy piece of art. I admire folks that do this all the time…it takes a lot of energy and a very good eye:)

haha Chandler spotted them and he said he knew they where worth with something. I negotiated with the man because you know the woman knew they where worth money. We got lucky! =)

I’m not a garage sale fan but I learned a technique that works for me when traveling: I watch someone else bargain and then walk away and then I asked the seller if I could have the item at the price they reached and he agreed. There are quite a few roadrunners to be seen in Prescott‚ where I live. They don’t beep.

I do enjoy garage sales and a good find. But I’d need a bit more than a cup of coffee to be out the door at 6:45. Now that’s dedication!

I am not a garage sale addict.‚ however shopping on line can be addicting because of the ease and convenience. I do not like ebay after a bad experience.

Arleen‚ I totally agree. Do tell if you like about your bad experience. I sell alot on there‚ and would love to learn from bad experiences and mistakes. I love on-line shopping too!

Crystal‚ I tend to live and travel light these days so am not in the acquisitive mode but there was a time that I really enjoyed garage sales and if you think about it they were one of the earliest forms of recycling with benefits to all.

My mom and grandma used to drag me to yard sales when I was a kid and it was a lot of fun. I would get something like $5 for the day and come home with all kinds of fun stuff‚ usually for Barbies or model horses. I’ve not been on the prowl since‚ but May again since I am looking for some beat-up wooden furniture to customize with paint. I’ve only held one garage sale a few years ago before I move cross country. It was intense. We posted it on Craiglist and people descended like vultures. It was great! Most of our stuff sold out in two hours

Jeri‚ that is awesome. Alot of people do that out here as a business. They buy furniture from garage sales‚Craigslist‚ and restore them to look brand new. People can get really excited at garage sales. Especially if you had good stuff posted on your Craigslist. I hope find a fabulous piece of furniture. =)

You are very serious about these garage sales lol. You sound like one of my friends who does the same thing with the exception of getting up at 4am. It really sounds like fun. After I make my big move this summer and get settled in I want go to a few garage sales and see what I can find. You have inspired me lol.

haha! I know I am hungry for the chase. I like the idea of paying 2.00 for something and then making a great profit off it. Awesome! Get out there and find a golden nugget. =)

Love your graphic! Garage sales are one thing that I have to stay away from for fear of buying someone else’s stuff to only store at my house.
The only time I will hit a garage sale is if they are selling products that I can offer in a giveaway on my site..such as a 31 or MK rep.

OOOh God you have a lot of energy and stamina.
I am always sick of bargaining ‚ some people ‚ I do not know why they will tell you a price that will be quite surprising ‚ I simply say ‚ If you want to sell then tell me right and exact price. I never went to check any garage sales here in Saudi Arabia.
