What do I want to be when I grow up?
Ripped‚ stone washed jeans where the hot look then.
This is a picture of me in second grade. I already had a “who’s the boss” attitude.
My Mom and I had a garage sale last Saturday. Children of all ages where joining their parents to find that one item that will make their day. All the little girls flocked to the jewelry and the boys ran to the action figures. I asked these two girls what they wanted to be when they grow up. They were ten and five years old. The ten year old shouted out‚ loud and proud‚ “I want to be a famous singer!” She reminded me of myself at that age. The girl was full of dreams and bossiness.
The interaction brought me back to eighth grade. The teacher asked the class to write a essay on how our lives will pan out‚ ten years from now. I still have the essay and it made me laugh because I emulated a matter of fact‚ attitude at age 14. I knew what my life would look like and I had a plan. I wrote full speed ahead‚ and there was no reason to contemplate my life. I wrote with the intention of I know everything and I got everything figured out.
I laid it all out in a forward manner.
1# I want to be a psychologist when I grow up.
2# I want to have two children and not one. I do not want them to be spoiled.
3# marrying at age 30 is off limits. There are an abundance of things to do. Traveling the world is at the top of my list.
4# my husband has to be nice and like dogs. If he dislikes dogs‚ then there isn’t a point in getting married. ( I am in eighth grade and know the ways of the world).
Ironically‚ my fate said no to becoming a psychologist. Although‚ my dramatic demeanor swore on my grave and vowed to never get married in my youth‚ I married at 27. It must have been all the horrible dates I went on. Crystal fell subject to the bitter barn. I did marry a a great guy. Lucky for me‚ I won with a guy who likes dogs. There are no children at the age of 31‚ and haven’t resorted to a vagabond.
I have always tried to plan life according to my will. God laughs at me. God says to me‚”guess what Crystal‚ I will make a better than you could imagine … life.” Ten years later there is a great guy in my life‚ in edition‚ I buy and sell items on eBay and Amazon. The cards have been dealt‚ and I cashed in on a great future. Crystal is a happy woman.
What did you want to be when you where younger? Is it different from what you ended up doing as an adult?
As of now (10) people have had something to say...

I also have a “love” of animals so I always wanted to be a veterinarian. Well I worked in a animal hospital for about 1 week thou I should have stayed. I also worked for Petsmart and that was fun! Closest type of job to have with working with animals because my counselors at school said I wouldn’t have “cut” it. THEN I also wanted to go to school and dance. Don’t know what I would have learned there either than just wanting to dance! So all in all I have worked at various jobs almost from A-Z and not many were what I wanted to be when I grow up!

Now‚ 8th grade crystal was on to something… if someone doesn’t like dogs‚ don’t get too close to them.

I had to laugh. I started out with a very purposeful and direct path the be a teacher. I became one and was quite successful at it. Sadly I had to leave it and ultimately became a sales and marketing executive. With my recent move ran on my old diary‚ what a world I thought I would live in and what a difference from that to today. Regardless it’s still been quite a ride.

That is great that your old profession included being a teacher. I hear that is a tough job and I commend you for helping people learn. I love reading old diaries! =)

Hi Jacqueline‚ I agree with you a 100 percent! “Life is a journey and not a destination.” In eight grade I wanted to go straight to the destination. lol =)

That’s very cute Crystal. I remember only little bits of my ambitions and certainly do not have the good fortune of an essay written at a young age. I remember the following:
1. Will not drink whiskey until I am over 30
2. Will get married at 30
3. Will travel the world when in my 20’s then do it again when I retire
4. Will be a fireman
hmmm…one out of 4 ain’t bad!

Wow! I would have never imagined that on my list. To not drink till I am 30 at that age would have been torture to me. Now that I am at the ripe old age of 31‚ the worst I do is eat a doughnut every once in a while. lol Thanks for sharing your list . =)
